Transmission Service And Clutch Replacement

Transmission Service And Clutch Replacement

Learn More About Your Transmission Service And Clutch Replacement

The transmission is a big part of your vehicle, and transmission service should be included in your routine car maintenance. What is transmission service? The main goal of transmission service is to flush out and replace the transmission fluid. Of course, there are many other parts to the transmission that may require service as well, including the clutch in a manual transmission. To help our New Bedford, Dartmouth, and beyond drivers, here's a closer look at what transmission service entails.

Four Common Transmission Services

1) Automatic Transmission Fluid Exchange

The automatic transmission fluid lubricates the gears within your transmission. Over time, the combination of friction, heat, and time will cause this viscous fluid to break down. Fluid that is broken down won't complete the job it's meant to perform, allowing your transmission to receive damage. In order to prevent this, you'll want to have your transmission fluid routinely changed according to the timeline in your Ford's owner's manual. For most vehicles, it's recommended to have your automatic transmission fluid changed every 60,000-to 100,000 miles.

This fluid exchange starts with removing the transmission drain plug and completely draining the old fluid. The technician will then inspect the plug, refill the transmission system with fresh, clean fluid, and insert the plug.

2) Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid Replacement

The transmission also includes a filter that's used to remove dirt and debris out of the transmission fluid as it moves. It also will become dirty and unusable over time.

This filter and fluid replacement starts with removing the transmission pan and replacing the old filter with a brand-new one. The technician will also remove and replace the gasket material. Then the transmission pan is reinstalled, and a transmission fluid exchange is performed.

3) Manual Transmission Service

If you have a manual transmission, the process is slightly different. Because the manual transmission has a clutch, the technician will need to ensure that the entire system has been evacuated before being refilled with the right type of transmission fluid. The clutch will also need to be inspected to make sure that it's in proper working order. Most manual transmission services are recommended every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

4) Complete Transmission Service

A complete transmission service is a comprehensive transmission service that covers every detail of the transmission, whether you have an automatic or manual. This complete transmission service includes:

  • Transmission fluid replacement
  • Transmission filter replacement
  • Transmission sump and pan inspection
  • Transmission pan cleaning and material replacement (if needed)
  • Clutch inspection (if applicable)
  • Inspection for friction damage or metal particles

When Do I Know My Clutch Needs To Be Replaced?

With use and time, your manual clutch will need to be replaced as part of your car care. If you notice that your clutch feels spongy, is sticking, causes noises, or makes it hard to accelerate, it's time for a new clutch. A clutch replacement includes multiple steps, but is a simple process that shouldn't take long to complete.
